You're right Legal Eagle, it may well be too late; I'm surprised I hadn't heard about this story earlier. I guess we only have enough outrage for one citizen at a time.

Though one thing the David Hicks scenario does suggest is that there is no position so sacred that this government wouldn't do an about-face given enough public disquiet.

It also presents an opportunity for the opposition to demonstrate that the government has learnt nothing from the David Hicks saga.

You're right KC, a charge of 'conspiracy to commit copyright infringement' is even more dubious and insubstantial.

Hew entered into a plea bargain a couple of weeks ago. The plea deal was only for the charge of conspiracy to commit copyright infringenment, The charge of copyright infringement was dismissed. Part of the plea deal was for the sentence given in the US to take into account time served here in Australia. I don't see how this is even fair given that Hew has already served 3 years in prison and John Sankus, the leader of Drink or Die was sentenced to 46 months and that was reduced to 18 months. The US will not give Hew a sentence for time served and let him walk. You are right that this is a politcal show trial.

P.S. I will certainly be e-mailing Chris Ellison, although I think it's too late for Mr Griffiths...he's to be sentenced on 22 June 2007.

Cheers, LE
