Top Universities Go Green with New Programs

Recycle Mania is a non-profit organization that sponsors a contest among colleges to encourage recycling. Their boards of directors are members of various universities with 350 schools participating from 48 states. Categories include waste minimization, recyclables per capita, bottles & cans. Outstanding among the participants are the following five colleges.

Valencia College in Orlando Florida has an enrollment of 42,600 students. Valencia’s recycling program has been in the works for about five years. Beginning in 2007 the school began collecting paper products, and between February 2007 and September 2008, they had processed 43 tons of materials. In 2011 they were second in the Recycle Mania contest. In 2012 and 2013, they won first place in the waste minimization category. Administration, students, and faculty all participate in the sustainable effort. The school encourages the students to use water fountains rather than bottled water, and they conserve energy by shutting down heating and cooling units after hours, buying green products, planting trees, and creating a smoke-free campus.

At Kalamazoo College, it is the students that run the recycling program. Traveling around the campus in two golf carts volunteers collect the bins and take them to a sorting location. The center of their recycling program is the “Bat Cave” named for a preserved bat once found there. Bikes are repaired and loaned out, and used school supplies are stocked at the cave and recycled. Food waste gets hauled to a pig farm in the area. They are consistent winners, taking first place in two categories in 2008 and first in bottles and cans in 2012.

In 2011 Harvard topped all other Ivy League schools with an incredible 8400 tons of recycled material. In 2009 they initiated a program in which all recyclables get discarded in the same container, and this increased the recyclables collected. They also run various programs such as the collection of trash and recyclables at football games and tailgate parties. By setting up trash bins throughout the stadium during games, they can collect thousands of gallons of recyclable material. They also save rainwater, which saves 25,000 gallons of water each year.  Harvard is also one of the few colleges to offer Styrofoam recycling on campus. No need to ban Styrofoam here!

Georgia Tech also runs a game day tailgating program. Hundreds of volunteers hand out trash bags to tailgaters before the games. Folks in attendance inside the stadium may fill the bags and leave them to be picked up later by staff. In the 2015 football season, they topped themselves by collecting 34 tons of recyclables. The school runs an AWARE program in which students and faculty participate. Waste and recycle bins are placed in ten buildings across the campus, and the students and staff are responsible for the collecting and emptying them into the large bins. Georgia Tech has won numerous awards for their recycling efforts.

American University in Washington DC has been striving for zero waste since the founding of their sustainability program in 2009. They have created one of the most efficient college recycling programs. There is a recycle destination for every bit of paper, cans, glass, cardboard, plastic as well as electronic equipment, lubricants, tires, furniture, grease, and food. Winners of the 2012 Recycle Mania contest, American University beat 604 other colleges.

Americans are recycling twice as much now as they did twenty years ago. Our colleges are showing us how much more can get accomplished with creative and innovative recycling programs.

US Boarding Schools Offer Elite Education

Boarding schools in the United States offer a wide variety of educational settings and formats. These prestigious institutions boast high performance on exams, rigorous academics, unique experiences, and student matriculation to America’s top colleges.
Various educational philosophies are represented in these schools. Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Minnesota has a unique structure where upper grades only meet as a group twice per week. During the other school days, students work independently or one-on-one with instructors on personal projects. Indian Springs School of Alabama fosters independence by allowing students to run their own small town government within the school. The top rated boarding school in the nation, Philips Exeter Academy, teaches classes through a round table discussion format. This method of teaching, known as the Harkness method, challenges and motivates students to make the learning their own as they prepare for their classes.
Although they have various ways of meeting their goals, the top boarding schools have many commonalities. They put a premium on college preparation and advance placement classes that challenge their students to continually perform at higher academic levels. Additionally, many of the boarding schools offer a wide variety of classes centered around student creativity. They encourage students to branch out and choose classes that the typical high school student is not exposed to. For example, at various schools, students can learn how to create and edit videos, record music, work on Oyster Farms, and cross the Atlantic in school owned “maritime research vessel.” No matter your educational philosophy, boarding schools succeed in fostering the independence, critical thinking skills, and academic rigor that help students along the path of success.
What about college? How do students in America’s top boarding schools fare after secondary school, especially after the leadership of those like Eric F. Peterson? The top three boarding schools in the nation boast graduates that matriculate to University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown, Brown, Harvard, and Yale. Additionally, these august institutions count Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, and former U.S. President George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush in their ranks of graduates.
Wide ranging in their structure and educational focus, boarding schools offer students opportunities that simply cannot be found in public schools. Millions of dollars in financial aid are spent each year to provide dedicated and high achieving students the opportunity to experience this type of top-notch education. These elite schools provide students with outstanding academic rigor and real-world challenges to prepare them for their future success.

New Development Coming to Baltimore

Metropolitan Partnership Ltd. and Madison Marquette recently announced plans to build a 33-story, 404-foot glass building near Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The property located on Light Street had formally been a parking lot, but the Virginia developer has proposed to construct a mixed-use building that will feature both apartments and offices. According to the plan the building will have 10 floors of offices, about 340 apartments and a 646-spot parking garage. It is just the type of new property development Baltimore needs to meet the growing needs of local residents and business people.

Last summer a proposal to build a 22-story apartment project at the cost of $110 million was approved and about $28 million in bonds to build the parking garage was raised by the Baltimore Development Corporation. The decision to add 10 floors of offices may have influenced by M&T Bank’s need for office space. Cary M. Euwer Jr., Metropolitan’s CEO, says the added office space is designed to help develop the financial district and support the company’s other Light Street projects on the key downtown block.

This type development has long been what stakeholders envisioned for the area and has the backing of city leaders and the Downtown Partnership. It meets their urban design and architecture desires and could spur further development, transform the President Street area and benefit the city long-term. Although questions still remain about the viability of the area as a live-work-play zone so close to Little Italy’s small row homes, many are excited about what the project could mean for the city’s future. Many other residential and commercial developments have been proposed.

There is another proposal for a 16 story tower with apartments and retail space. Planning director Thomas J. Stosur and other city leaders are excited about the vitality the projects will bring to the President Street area and downtown Baltimore in general. There is now growing momentum for the area to grow, development and be transformed into something of which people can be proud. The challenge is to have the new development be compatible with the established neighbors. But the proposed projects will create jobs, stimulate economic growth and create yet another destination for visitors and Baltimore residents to visit and enjoy.

These projects are an encouraging sign that hint about a new vibrancy for President Street, One Light Street and the downtown area in general. They show that positive changes are coming to the area.

Getting Children Ready for A Bright Future with Boarding School

When you send children to boarding schools, they can obtain benefits that he or she wouldn’t obtain through public school. These benefits can help children reach their academic goals and succeed after they graduate.

A boarding school is a place of learning, living, and relaxing. Boarding schools have everything students need to be successful such as libraries, sports fields, science laboratories, swimming pools, theaters, which also have the best equipment for each place. Students get many benefits from attending a boarding school. Listing them all would make a fairly long list, but here are the benefits that are the most important.

Boarding schools are private, which means, students will benefit from his or her school being able to hire the best and most qualified teachers and other staff members. The best teachers can give children the most advanced education for the best academic success. Boarding schools also hire the best staff and equipment. They make sure that students are well taken care of and always have their best education in mind.

While attending boarding school, students get encouraged to live on their own and gain their responsibility for their belongings and duties. They are taught to organize their time well and make their own decisions. Everything they learn by living on their own teaches them the skills required to living a well-ordered life. Boarding schools are great for busy parents who want to make sure their child is able to study and live safely.

Boarding schools take fewer students than public schools. That means, teachers are able to take more time teaching children and will be able to sit one-on-one with all children.

Boarding school students are better prepared for college. Past students reported that they were prepared to take on college academics because the education they got from boarding school, and also said that the daily life at boarding schools is what help them prepare for life during and after college.

Students learn a lot from boarding school and the things they learn will not only help with their education, but they build character. They are taught independence, stability, social skills, and still get a better educational experience than public school. Past students say that the skills they learned from boarding school are what help them succeed in life out of school. The academic curriculum found at boarding schools like St. George’s School or The Putney School is unmatched.
